First Look at Carl Rinsch's 47 Ronin
Posted July 24, 2013 03:55 PM by
Universal Studios has released the first trailer for director Carl Rinsch's action drama 47 Ronin (2013), starring Keanu Reeves, Hiroyuki Sanada, Tadanobu Asano, Yorick van Wageningen, and Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa. The film is set to arrive in theaters across the United States on December 25th.
Official synopsis: Keanu Reeves makes an explosive return to action-adventure in 47 Ronin. After a treacherous warlord kills their master and banishes their kind, 47 leaderless samurai vow to seek vengeance and restore honor to their people. Driven from their homes and dispersed across the land, this band of Ronin must seek the help of Kai (Reeves)—a half-breed they once rejected—as they fight their way across a savage world of mythic beasts, shape-shifting witchcraft and wondrous terrors. As this exiled, enslaved outcast becomes their most deadly weapon, he will transform into the hero who inspires this band of outnumbered rebels to seize eternity. Helmed by director Carl Rinsch (The Gift), 47 Ronin is produced by Scott Stuber (Ted, Identity Thief), Pamela Abdy (Identity Thief, upcoming Kill the Messenger) and Eric McLeod (Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Austin Powers series).
Keanu Reeves kinda ruins this for me. He is not a particularly strong actor, kinda the same in all of his roles unless he's doing comedy. This would be better with a different lead. But it looks pretty cool nonetheless.
I don't know about this^. Keanu looks really good in this trailer. For the genre it belongs to, this could be a very good film. This is my first impression.
You listed "Tadanobu Asano" twice in the cast list.
As for the trailer, I heard about this movie during its development stage and thought it would be more reality-based like "Seven Samurai" or "13 Assassins," but now it looks like "300" (or 47) meets "The Man with the Iron Fists." I was surprised by the latter, so maybe this one will do the same.
I'm definitely in It reminds of the Last Samurai with some fantasy thrown in for good measure. Very loosely based on the story of the 47 ronin. Could be a lot of fun and I don't mind Keanu in a movie like this.
Yep...a pinch of Last Samurai...a pinch of Lord of the Rings...dose of 13 Assassins...and a tad of Wrath of the Titans...and viola....47 Ronin!...Looks good to me.
If it's going with an extreme fantasy angle with the classic tale, I got nothing against it. But I've been disappointed with Western-produced Asian-inspired films before, with "Ninja Assassin" and "The Man with the Iron Fists" later on; I don't want to go through that again.
Wow, this even looks worse than I thought. A fantasy Samurai film, I mean is this a joke? Keanu looks horrible as he is in 95% of his films. It's a shame because it's a classic story and has some very solid supporting cast including Sanada and Asano but this looks like complete garbage. I was already going to most likely pass this one up but after seeing this trailer it's an easy choice not waste my time with this effort..
Don't know if I'll like this or not, but I at least have to give credit to Keanu for coming back in this kind of role at almost 50-years-old. Dude still looks like he can kick ass easily. I'm telling you, he's still alive in the Matrix somewhere.
Looks pretty awful. A bad mashup of Tom Cruise/The Last Samurai, 13 Assassins * 3.61538462, Jet Li's terrible CGI-overloaded The Sorcerer And The White Snake, "I Know Kung Fu" from The Matrix, and Keanu Reeves with a pubic-hair beard/mustache. Hopefully the budget isn't as big as all this summer's blockbuster bombs, because I think it will have the same disappointing results. I'd rather watch any of my Shaw Brothers collection, bad ketchup blood and all, than this.
Looks fun, but still disappointing that this isn't the actual real story of the 47 Ronin, which would of been awesome as it's a story that didn't need all the CGI, Dragons, Monsters, and hollywood hooplah to be amazing.
