Three Avatar Sequels Coming Up
Posted August 1, 2013 03:45 PM by
Twentieth Century Fox has announced that it will finance and produce not two, as previously rumored, but three sequels to James Cameron's blockbuster Avatar. Josh Friedman (Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles), Shane Salerno (Savages), and Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver (Rise of Planet of The Apes) have already been hired to work on the scripts for the upcoming films.
According to early reports, the three films will be shot simultaneously. Production is currently set to begin next year.
The first sequel is expected to arrive in theaters across the United States in December 2016, with the second to follow in December 2017, and the third a year later.
Following the official announcement, director Cameron commented: "Building upon the world we created with Avatar has been a rare and incredibly rewarding experience. In writing the new films, I've come to realize that Avatar's world, story and characters have become even richer than I anticipated, and it became apparent that two films would not be enough to capture everything I wanted to put on screen. And to help me continue to expand this universe, I'm pleased to bring aboard Amanda, Rick, Shane and Josh — all writers I've long admired – to join me in completing the films screenplays."

Go work on restoring True Lies and Terminator 2, than screwing around with these Avatar films. Both films should have gotten new 4K transfers and been released by now.
This is all bad. I don't like when they shoot sequels back to back. It worked for the Hobbit and Lord of the Rings because they shot all of it at once so they had a cohesive feel and look. Matrix 2 and 3, Back to the Future 2 and 3 and Pirates of the Caribbean 2 and 3 were all shot at once and they felt like one movie split in half, not two seperate movies and they felt distinctly different than their first film. This kind of squashed my hopes for this franchise.
I don't get the negativity. I thought Avatar was great and a cinematic milestone, and I'm sure the sequels will break new ground as well. This is Cameron's baby, so let him indulge I say!
I say, "Go for it!" I thought Avatar was an exceptional movie ... so did my entire family, all my co-workers, and everyone else I spoke to about it. The haters must be hiding out in the closets.
If you haters think you can make a better movie, then do it! Let me know when you have a final product, so we can compare it to "Avatar."
As far as "The Abyss" and "True Lies" go, have some fuckin' patience. Jeez, you're like my kids or Veruca Salt!
I think one of the reasons The Abyss gets so much demand is that it "is arguably" the biggest catalog title to yet get Blu treatment. It certainly would be a strong contender for #1 if we had a site poll for most-demanded yet-to-be-released or yet-to-be-announced catalog title. (and I really do wish we could have a poll like that).
Tech-UK - ok, cool. Process started in the Wish list sub forum. I opened a thread about what films should be in the poll question. Once that thread spins enough, I'll create an official poll.
When it comes to the stories, characters, etc. are the sequels going to have a little more originality to it? Just don't go downhill with the effects like the Star Wars prequels or you'll have nothing.
Hell, why not. I enjoy Avatar, despite it's cliche'd socio-political themes, "Dances with smurfs", etc. It's still a fun movie to watch even if just for the visuals. I look forward to the sequels, and seeign where this universe expands to, though I don't look forward to how old I will be when they come out...
Too bad the first one sucked and is overrated . Its like watching a damn video game. And the story was generic and predictable . How can they possible improve on this garbage ?
God there's a bunch of whiners and complainers on here. If u don't like it then don't fricking go watch it then simple. I , for one am looking forward to the sequels.
Fuck it. Fuck him. Cameron was awesome in the late 80's and the 90's. Now he's just money hungry and helping Fox milking cows. Like Fox needed more money?! Fox, that Fux up all the good movies.
Anyhow. I'm a proud NON-owner of any of the GAZILLION Avatar editions.
All I care about is getting a muthafuckin' STELLAR edition of T2, and also I want the other Cameron movies from The Abyss and up until 1994's True Lies. Oh, wait. That's only those two movies, actually. o_O
So, then. I'll settle for those his three movies in, again, STELLAR releases. I'm not giving that Smurfs-vs-Pocahontas loving guy a nickel for anything else.
@graham1138: Yes it worked for LOTR but how do you know it worked for The Hobbit? We've only seen one installment so far.
My issue with shooting simultaneously is that it takes away the chance for corrections based on what succeeded and failed in an earlier film. If The Star Wars prequels can been done at the same time there might have been no chance for Lucas to drastically cut back on Jar Jar Binks' screen time based on the negative reaction of the audience to the character. The second and third Matrix films would not have made the mistake of staging mutiple fights involving umpteen clones of Agent Smith to the point that the fights became a case of ho-hum (seen that before).
I understand those who are mad at the studio saying its a cash grab, but don't include Cameron in that assumption. If there was ever a film maker who didnt have to worry about money it would be James Cameron. I honestly feel like this franchise is a project made out of love by him. Whether or not the quality lives up to that is to be determined. I'm personally fascinated with seeing on where he takes it and what kind of technology he creates in the process of making the film.
BOY a lot of you guys are so damn negative... I'm totally loving the fact that there's more parts to this epic adventure of Avatar!!! Woohoo can't wait!!
@davidthenikonuser -- I know man, I've been looking forward to Battle Angel forever... He said he was going to finish this movie after he did Avatar... I would love to see a live action movie of BA.
Cannot wait for the sequels, but more originality please. It was basically Ferngullly The Last rainforest and I was watching the original Dragon Ball today (not Z) and noticed something in there that was used in Avatar.
Hey, I liked the first movie, better than I thought I would even though it wasn't original. However, I don't even think there should be ONE sequel at all. But hell, if you're going to do this, then we should be expecting three sequels to Dances With Wolves too. CASH GRAB!
Why does everyone want True Lies on BD? So you can see, crystal clearly, how much of the film is Arnie's stunt double? Trust me, unless there's some way to put Arnold's face on the stunt double, all you're going to see is that stunt double...all through the movie.
And as for all the bitching and moaning about these sequels, you all know you will see them. All of them. You guys are the reason Avatar is the biggest movie in the history of all movies. It's kewl to bash Cameron, I get it. But every time people doubt James Cameron, he figuratively sticks his foot in their ass.
He'll do it again with these sequels. I have 100% faith in James Cameron.
I enjoyed the first one for what it was, so I'll check these out. But, man, that's a whole lot of Avatar.
The one thing I thought was interesting is that he's bringing on additional help with screenwriting (something he doesn't typically do). So, while I'm sure a big part of this is to crank out the sequels for the $$$$, if he likes the dynamic, it might mean that we get more than 1 project a decade from him going forward, which would be nice.
Hey let's cry about this before we know the plot, details or anything about the movies other than that they are getting made!!
This site has more whining bitches per capita than any other.
A generic 'shiny' movie will only provide generic sequels. Avatar revolutionized 3D in a way no other movie did, but that is about it. CGI has been done in the same scale and better before, I truly still don't understand why it become so big. I don't even think (yes, MY opinion) that is was good popcorn, or that it had a better message than WALL-E or Battle for Terra (which has a more emotional thing for ME than Avatar). The sequels will make money, which is the reason why they're making them (Hobbit comes to mind).
What do you say we do True Lies in 4K before we do another Avatar...
There are fans out here that are waiting for True Lies to be done in 4k. So let's do True Lies before we do anymore Avatars.
Oh, wait a minute, I made enough money to hire a company to do True Lies in 4k. Okay fans... done. True Lies is next...
What? I was dreaming... crap! I want True Lies next! Come on Jimmy... get done with True Lies before you do another Avatar. Don't get me wrong, I like Avatar a maximum bunch, but can't we have True Lies before you start another Avatar?
Rumor has it that he is going to film the movie at 60fps. I wonder how that will look? I guess they're going to start inventing projectors that can project at variable frame rates if he uses 60fps.
If you consider the plot of the first film, I think a sequel actually makes sense. Think about it: when was the last time in all of history that Western settlers, especially those in search of a valuable resource, decided to retreat after someone took a tomahawk to the head? Do you really think that the corporation and its hired mercenaries are going to give up trying to obtain hilarious named "unobtainium?" Was Custer's last stand the end of Western expansion?
After losing billions of dollars and being humiliated by a bunch of giant blue Ewoks, is it more likely that the head of the corporation will see the error of his ways, or will he invest the rest of his assets into burning the surface of Pandora with orbital missiles before sending in an assault fleet the size of Colorado?
Remember, the humans only lost to the Na'vi because they were poorly equipped, fighting with machine guns and fragile aircraft that couldn't even stand up to the local wildlife. They were lacking the future-generation cruise missiles, stealth bombers and who knows what other kind of weapons of mass destruction they've invented in the intervening 150 years. But they'll have them when they come back. And they'll have the permission to use them, too. After all, the aliens killed a bunch of humans. Hell, they'll probably get a government bailout for their losses.
And speaking of a poorly equipped military, why didn't the military have any un-manned vehicles/aircraft? The only unmanned vehicle they had was a giant tree cutter. I mean, they're on a planet where puny humans and their conventional weapons stand no chance against the Na'vi and Pandora's wildlife. Not to mention the fact that Pandora's atmosphere is toxic to humans. Why wouldn't you want to fight the Na'vi from the comfort of a non-toxic base?
I was still hoping he'd finish his Galaxy of Terror Quadrilogy. Oh well, I will probably rent these at some point. Heck, if I still lived near a theater I'd even go see them.
For the one idiot preaching that we're being impatient waiting for blu ray Abyss/True Lies, give me a break. We've havent even had freaking anamorphic DVD release let alone a blu ray one. EVER. If you're okay with that you're on the wrong forum man. As for the assertion that Avatar was "exceptional" as backed up by your friends and co-workers, all I can say is that must be one amazing Algonquin Round Table. Avatar obviously has a massive amount of fans so there is no doubt this is a smart movie by Cameron. That doesn't mean it's a good one. For many of his fans from his early career we lost him after True Lies. It would be great to be a fan of the blue cat alien people, because the huge money and production going into a whole new trilogy of Avatar movies must be exciting, it just isn't for me personally. Or anyone I know.
I don't know what the big deal is and all the hype. To me its just another cowboy & Indian movie. Sets are on an alien planet where for the first time everyone is rooting for the Indians who won the first round. Didn't they make a million westerns back in the early days of movies & television?
Well Boothilll considering your childish little tantrum it seems a bit ironic you keep recycling your pacifier "joke", when clearly you are the only one who really needs it.
I hated it.it was the biggest disappointment I ever seen.i wasted my money buying the first blueray but I will never buy another one.as for going to the movies is out the question the last time I went to a movie was starwars.
Way past due for the sequel mania. Fox must be very desperate since they lost their beloved Star Wars franchise!!! The original Avatar was a good one, but not that great.
While viewing the first Avatar I kept saying to myself ... This feels like a video game .... They are definitely making another one ... Something I promised myself I would not spend $50 (if you include your date) on. This movie was not good ... The effects were great ... But effects dont make a good movie ... See Pacific Rim ... Or better yet see the I inevitable sequel to Pacific Rim ... Lol ... I am truly getting bored of these movies.
What was the last truly great movie you saw in the theatre ? Or maybe that topic deserves its own thread.
Who knows how long these are really going to take to release? Cameron has been promising them for years. I just hope he's been taking his time so he can put more effort into creating better story lines without just remaking Dances With Wolves and including irritatingly ham-handed socio-political propaganda.
Also, supposedly we'll be seeing True Lies get a BD release next year.
And by the way, @BigBang you really should be careful what you say when criticizing the concept of a True Lies BD in a thread that is obviously populated by Cameron fans.
