Universal Studios Home Entertainment has detailed its upcoming 4K Blu-ray releases of Joseph Kosinski's Oblivion, Peter Berg's Lone Survivor and Luc Besson's Lucy. The three releases will be available for purchase in August.
This groundbreaking cinematic event stars Tom Cruise as Jack Harper, the lone security repairman stationed on a desolate, nearly-ruined future Earth. When he rescues a beautiful stranger from a downed spacecraft, her arrival triggers a nonstop chain of events that forces him to question everything he knows, and leaves humanity's fate in his hands. Academy Award-winner Morgan Freeman joins Cruise in this "visually stunning" (Pete Hammond, Movieline), explosive story from the director of TRON: Legacy and the producer of Rise of the Planet of the Apes.

Based on The New York Times bestselling true story of heroism, courage and survival, Lone Survivor tells the incredible tale of four Navy SEALs on a covert mission to neutralize a high-level al-Qaeda operative. The four men must make an impossible moral decision in the mountains of Afghanistan that leads them into an enemy ambush. As they confront unthinkable odds, the SEALs must find reserves of strength and resilience to fight to the finish. Academy Award nominee Mark Wahlberg (The Fighter) leads an all-star cast including Taylor Kitsch (Savages), Ben Foster (3:10 to Yuma), Emile Hirsch (Into the Wild), and Eric Bana (Munich) in a movie hailed by critics as "unforgettable, tense, and inspiring." (Movieline)
From the visionary director of La Femme Nikita and The Professional and starring Scarlett Johansson and Academy Award® winner Morgan Freeman comes an action-thriller about a woman accidentally caught in a dark deal who turns the tables on her captors. Altered by a dangerous new drug allowing her to use 100% of her brain capacity, Lucy transforms into a merciless warrior evolved beyond human logic.
Oblivion looked fan-f*kcing-tastic on BD. Worth an upgrade? (As a 2K DI would mean a 4K upconvert).
But I wonder (as I am simply future-proofing at the moment, not 4K ready yet), will the 1080pBD copy be the same as the 2013 release OR will it have a Dolby Atmos track with it & a different AVC transfer. Although it would be hard to improve on the 2013 release.
Oh, off topic. But, in Australia (no UHD BD players on sale yet), saw a Samsung UHD BD hooked up to a 4K LG OLED display at JB HiFI. I got to watch the start of X-Men:Days of Future Past on 4K BD... It looked unbelievably good. Could not get over the fine detail, you could see the rough texture in the keloid scarring of the scar on Bishops face, skin imperfections on Kitty Pryde, the level of detail on the sentinels and Iceman. Wow!
since I'm still rocking 1080p, the video doesn't mean very much to me, however, I am also rocking 7.1.4, so, yeah, DAY ONE for all especially Oblivion!
Oblivian was the first movie I saw in Atmos, so it has sentimental value. I might get it for that reason since this is the first time that Atmos track will be available at home.
Oblivion might be worthwhile, the most compelling thing about UltraHD is HDR and WCR, not the resolution, if these are present on Oblivion, then it would be worth double-dipping. (HDR and WCR bring the image color and dynamic range closer to that of film, it is about better quality not just more pixels. ...Yes, even the best 1080p HD digital movie does not have the color range nor dynamic range of film, not at all. In theaters, digital projectors might be brighter than film used to be, and saturation may sometimes be better, however, the color and dynamic range are way less than that of film. Some have the misconception that HDR or WCR might make things off from the director's intent, however, when it comes to film to digital transfers, these will only, (finally), bring the digital quality closer to that of film, but it will not exceed it.)
Also, Dolby Atmos should be on every BD & UltraHD BD, where it was available in the theater, so, finally, yes on this!
...oh, question: does anyone know if Oblivion's effects were done in 2K or 4K? I'm pretty sure the live action was 4K, but, that doesn't mean the effects were.
"Director of photography Claudio Miranda ASC, who won an Academy Award for The Life of Pi, has said publicly the movie was shot in Raw format and a great deal of the VFX (video effects) were also shot in 4K leading to the very sharp 2K image upon the movie’s release."
@solarrdadd: Be careful and check the specs closely before you buy. It is likely that the ATMOS tracks are only on the 4K disc and that the 1080P BD is just another copy of the excellent one already released.
@cosmonaut: Yes it would look incredible but do you see an actual mention of HDR in those specs? Not all UHD discs will have HDR or colour improvements.
"tman418
I remember seeing Oblivion in IMAX, with an expanded aspect ratio of 1:90:1. Why not expand it to 1:78:1?!
And...not sure if many of you knew this, but "Lucy" was partially filmed with IMAX cameras! Why can't the aspect ratio be expanded?!"
I agree with this^^^^^!!!
skimrn & paper tiger, let's hope they go back and remaster for UHD with HDR and wider color, and not just transferred from the master used for the HD BD, for this reason:
"CosmoNut
The dark library fight scene in Oblivion will probably look pretty amazing in HDR."
I agree!!!
...
Now, for Oblivion, I checked out the main camera used, the Sony CineAlta F65, and it was brand new at the time and does shoot with HDR & WCG, however, they also used Red Epic, and I'm not sure if those all shoot w/HDR and or WCG. ...So, it's possible, if they take the time to do it right, we might see HDR & WCG on the UHD BD! (I'm with skimrn, the original blu-ray does look spectacular for HD, so it'd be really something to see them do it right and top that with HDR & WCG!)
