Terminator 2: 3D - James Cameron Q&A

Posted March 10, 2017 12:04 PM by

Studio CanalStudioCanal have sent us a new filmed Q&A session with director James Cameron in which he discusses the world premiere of Terminator 2: 3D at the 67th Berlin International Film Festival.

Currently, the new 3D version of Terminator 2: 3D is set to open in theaters across the United States and the United Kingdom on August 25.

In the United States, currently the original film is available on Blu-ray courtesy of Lionsgate Home Entertainment.

Synopsis: Arnold Schwarzenegger returns as The Terminator in this explosive action-adventure spectacle. Now he's one of the good guys, sent back in time to protect John Connor, the boy destined to lead the freedom fighters of the future. Linda Hamilton reprises her role as Sarah Connor, John's mother, a quintessential survivor who has been institutionalized for her warning of the nuclear holocaust she knows is inevitable. Together, the threesome must find a way to stop the ultimate enemy - the T-1000, the most lethal Terminator ever created. Co-written, produced and directed by James Cameron (The Terminator, Titanic), this visual tour de is also a touching human story of survival.

So many disappointing releases of this movie over the years; Would finally like to see this film brought to blu and done right, with a great transfer ( no DNR, please) and porting over of all the extras from the various editions. If the 3D is even half as impressive as what Cameron did for Titanic, fans are in for a treat.

@MJD64 Have you seen the US 2015 BD (aka the fan-dubbed "Van Ling Edition")? It has the best-looking PQ of any home video release so far (Little to no DNR), it is encoded in AVC, not VC-1 or MPEG-2, and it has most of the special features from the SkyNet Edition ported over, save for the commentary track, and the two extra deleted scenes ("T-1000 searches for John" and "Alternate ending"). Sure, it could look better with a proper 4K scan and mastering, but you can find it in the $7.88 bargain bin at Wal-Mart, and as I said, it's the best PQ to date on any of the home video releases.

I know it sounds corny, but when this comes out on BD, I'd love to see Universal Studios Terminator 2 3D show as an extra on here like they did with the Back to the Future release. I know you kind of need some actors running around, but it would still be nice to have the clips. Who knows?

Cameron I love you. T2 great movie. But please please spread the love and get us True Lies and The Abyss. (yes I know The Abyss has been confirmed verbally but we all know what weight that holds until the blu-ray is in our hands) That being said, I have purchased T2 so many times over so may formats that I welcome a pristine, cleaned up, and hopefully immersive audio encoded new transfer. Just give the fans a 2D version as well please.

@killermike2178, a friend of mine has that disc and the elimination of the DNR is indeed a great improvement but, like you, I do think better results can be achieved. Cameron could see this movie finally done right and I'd love to see a new 4K transfer and a second disc to hold all the extras. This movie deserves nothing less, and Cameron could surely make it happen. His releasing it in 3D with a subsequent release on blu is the perfect opportunity for him to do so.

For a dead technology, 3D is putting in a damn good showing against 4K last week. Dr Strange sold a lot more 3D units than Hacksaw Ridge did 4K... same %, much higher volume...

"Marvel Studios' Doctor Strange proved magical on the home video sales charts the week ended March 5, outselling its nearest competitor by more than a 4-to-1 margin."

1 New Doctor Strange 2/28/17 Disney/Marvel Fantasy 1 $232.61 76% 100.00 7% -
2 1 Hacksaw Ridge 2/21/17 Lionsgate Drama 2 $67.16 52% 22.31 - 7%

Hopefully this and The Avatar Sequels will help convince display manufacturers that 3D isn't nearly as dead as they would have lead us to believe and we can continue to see a steady supply of new sets with the capability to display 3d with more films following suit as well.

@bluraybascom: Right and also James should get busy preparing The Abyss and True Lies (latter promised years ago) for BD or even 4K BD. T2 is a great movie but its old news. He's just wasting time bringing it back to the theatre. He should be working on his next Avatar although I fear that he has already missed the boat on it. AV2 is going to have to start off from square one because any viewer interest/momentum form the first Avatar movie has long since dissipated.

We're in the 11th year of Blu-Ray and one of the best sci-fi movies or action movies for that matter still hasn't got a proper special edition. Anyone here in the know or have a qualified guess why this hasn't happened? Why is T2 treated which such disrespect? A true restoration in 4k of course cost a lot of money, but that can't be the issue, fans would be all over a new "deluxe collector's edition", meaning state of the art P&Q plus new bonus materials and special packaging. A release like that would for sure be a bestseller!

@dannalexcon-I've heard from other forums that apparently Cameron and Fox are now sensitive to the terrorism in True Lies and that's why we don't have a release for that film unfortunately. I remember in mid 2001 it was supposed to get a special edition dvd but as soon as 9/11 happened it's like the film fell off of the planet. As for The Abyss I am baffled on why that doesn't have a blu ray and I am also baffled as to why in Cameron's right mind would he do anything to jeopardize the color timing for T2. Also he's been busy with pointless Avatar sequels to a subpar original.

@TripleHBK: 3D is not dead .... in the theatres. On a big screen it can be eye popping. In the home it's a nuisance and the public have rejected it and the glasses. If they eventually get 3D to work well without glasses that would make a difference but the problem of what current 3D really is would remain. What we're calling 3D is really closer to the old view master viewers where basically depth is simulated by placing objects at different distances from the lens. The result is a diorama effect best described as cardboard cut-outs against a background. It is a simulation of 3D but it is not what we ever see with our own vision. Real 3D is coming but it will rely on some form of holographic projection that will allow us to see all sides of an object/person as well as the top and bottom depending on where we place the holographic camera/projector (probably user controllable). That's a whole different technology that is closer to VR/AR than to the flat TV pictures of today.

@massivemoviebuff: Your insight into True Lies is very plausible. It had never occurred to me that the connection between this film, our current world and growing political correctness would be responsible for not making this film available on video. I've always treated this film as a hoot of an adventure, more comic book than real.

@vettesweetnos
It's the PETA people that are offended by The Abyss. The American Humane Society gave the film a rating of "UNACCEPTABLE" due to the scene of the rat being forced to breathe the liquid-oxygenated flurocarbon emulsion, which was real, by the way. The rat was truly terrified that it was drowning, panicked, and did, in desperation, breathe the fluid. It survived the ordeal, but the forced torture"drowning" of a live animal for the sake of a movie was pretty ethically challenging.

For those who keep asking about True Lies and The Abyss, I believe Cameron said it was much more the studio's decision (Fox) than his. Personally, I think Fox waited for 4K tech to lift off to release These.

3D is definitely not dead especially in the theaters. Most of the people I know that don't like 3D are the people that don't want to pay the extra $500 for the 3D Tv. This is a perfect movie to be released in 3D and I can't wait. I would definitely rather watch a good 3d movie over any 4K any day of the week and I have both a 3D and 4K tv. I don't see 3d going anywhere anytime soon.

What is Cameron's obsession with 3D??? It has stagnated for years and has shown zero organic growth in the market place. 3D TVs are dead and manufacturer's have switched to 4K, so what is the point?

Haven't you all heard? Cameron is 3D's champion. He will be the one to pioneer theater glasses-less, then home glasses-less. And if he doesn't deliver holographic movie technology before his life is over, someone following in his footsteps will. It's evolution. Cameron will almost single-handedly bring all those manufacturers back to 3D in the near future. Probably solely based on the enthusiasm for the Avatar sequels and theme park.

Get you some of that!

It would be great if the studios would step away from T2 for at least a few years and give it a break. First of all, there are just far too many releases of it on home video (most if not all of which are sub-par) and second of all, it's a good movie but not THAT good to warrant so many versions.
