The Hunger Games Series 4K Blu-ray
Posted September 1, 2016 03:13 PM by
Lionsgate Home Entertainment has officially announced that it will release on 4K Blu-ray The Hunger Games Series: The Hunger Games, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire and The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 and The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 4K. The four releases will be available for purchase on November 8.
The retail price for the first 3 is pretty good. Mockingjay Part 2, not so much. Two problems though. First, Catching Fire's UHD is reportedly ditching the 1.78:1 aspect ratio for the IMAX sequence. That's inexcusable. Second, these are Lionsgate catalog titles which have looked horrible thus far on this format(i.e. Expendables 3, Ender's Game, Divergent).
Hopefully these turn out well. If Lionsgate can't even get their biggest franchise right, then what hope do we have for the likes of T2, Total Recall, or the Saw series?
I wonder if this means the Blu-ray box set will drop in price once these are released. I've been thinking about picking it up, and with these coming out a few weeks before the Black Friday sales I'm hoping to find a good deal on the box set.
Just like with the regular Blu-rays, they've clearly made an effort to make the first three movies match on the case spines and the fourth movie doesn't match at all. When they're re-releasing them on a new format at the same time you think they would take that opportunity to make them match.
Bummed that the first film was finished at 2K, but really happy too see the rest are all actual 4K masters. Catching Fire's IMAX scenes should look amazing in UHD.
I also wonder if the original print was actually shot in 4k or only 2k..if the later, no difference than Blu Ray..There lies the rub for all 4k releases..are they REALLY 4k
We may never know, unless the film crews what they actually shoot these films in and what type of camera...Widescreen review will disclose the actual 4K elements, yet you will have to wait 1 to 2 weeks after release....FYI
@cornbread_1788 Yep,unfortunately, it's starting where stuff is becoming exclusive to 4K. This same stuff happened when Blu-rays started replacing DVDs. Stuff that you could usually find on DVDs, like audio commentaries, became Blu-ray-only features.
@ghostbobb89: Must disagree with you. What happened with BD when it was first introduced were barebone editions in 1080P without any of the special features from the DVDs. It was so bad that I developed the habit of keeping the Special Features disc from the equivalent DVDs. I have a whole bunch of these early discs some of which also lack lossless sound. Sony was major culprit by the way. This situation persisted for quite a while before BD's started to have special features. Even then many had the features in SD only (ie. ported without change from the DVD). That was one of the reasons that some reviewers started the practice of identifying special features found only on the HD disc, the so called HD exclusives.
